Feature: The Texas Qualifier
This weekend, Trials
of Miles Racing hosts The Texas Qualifier, a two night meet in
Austin, TX, staged to help athletes attain U.S. Olympic Trials qualifying or
Olympic qualifying times. Despite the recent winter weather disaster that
left millions without water, power, food, and/or shelter across Texas, the
meet will fortunately be able to go ahead as planned. Those wishing to
support the relief effort can contribute to organizations such as Austin Disaster Relief.
The meet features races from 800m up to 10,000m, with fields including many
of the top distance runners in the U.S. It's hard to even pick from the list
of luminaries who are slated to toe the line, but you can read previews of
the races on the Citius Mag webpage.
Minnesota Distance Elite has one athlete making the trip to Austin. Colin
Abert (pictured above, on the right) will be racing the 5000m in one of the
developmental heats on Saturday evening. A 1500m specialist, Colin has been
building a strong aerobic base over the the last year, and aims to cut some
time off his 14:10 personal best from his years at Penn State University.
Spectators are not allowed, but fans can follow along for free, with the
developmental races being shown on the Trials of Miles Instagram Live, and the
featured events on the Citius Mag YouTube channel.
